Roy Del Ruth (October 18, 1893 - April 27, 1961) began his Hollywood career in 1915 as a writer for Mack Sennett, transitioning to directing in 1919. He directed the successful Gold Diggers of Broadway (1929) before moving into talkies with musicals like Hold Everything (1930) and The Life of the Party (1930). He also directed a pre-Code adaptation of The Maltese Falcon (1931) and continued his successful collaboration with Cagney in films such as Taxi (1931) and Lady Killer (1933). His filmography includes a variety of genres and noteworthy titles like Broadway Melody of 1936 and Born to Dance (1936), as well as several musicals throughout the late '30s.
