Johan Mandt Kvalen (December 8, 1899 – September 12, 1987) was a Canadian-American character actor of Norwegian heritage who became one of Hollywood's most recognizable supporting players. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, to Norwegian immigrant parents, he began his career on the stage and gained attention for his role as a Swedish janitor in the Broadway play Street Scene. He recreated the role in the 1931 film adaptation and became a familiar character actor, frequently portraying Scandinavian and other ethnic characters. Among his many notable films were The Grapes of Wrath (1940), His Girl Friday (1940), The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941), Casablanca (1942), The High and the Mighty (1954), The Searchers (1956), and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962). Qualen worked extensively in films and television for more than four decades, appearing in more than 130 films and numerous television programs.
